Ukraine begins investigation into death of journalist Viktoria Roshchyna, soldier Hnezdilov taken into custody: October 11 highlights

Law enforcement officers have opened criminal proceedings over the death of former hromadske journalist Viktoria Roshchyna. The court sent Serhiy Hnezdilov, a soldier of the 56th Brigade, to custody at the guardhouse. We collected the main news for October 11.

Soldier Hnezdilov was sent to custody

On October 11, the Pecherskyi District Court of Kyiv sent Serhiy Hnezdilov, a serviceman of the 56th Brigade, to custody at the guardhouse. He is suspected of desertion.

The prosecutor's office asked for 60 days of detention for Hnezdilov, until December 12, without bail. The defense asked to reject the motion.

The serviceman claimed that he was ready to return to service, but only after a corresponding draft law on clear terms of service was submitted. Otherwise, he is ready to go on a hunger strike to draw attention to the problem of demobilization.

Ukraine began an investigation into the death of Viktoria Roshchyna

Law enforcement officers have opened a criminal investigation into the death of former hromadske journalist Viktoria Roshchyna. The case is classified as a war crime combined with intentional murder.

The Media Initiative for Human Rights reported that the journalist was detained in pre-trial detention center No. 2 in Taganrog. Former prisoners call it a prison with the most brutal torture.

Help from Germany

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in Berlin for a meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. The German chancellor announced a new aid package for Ukraine worth €1.4 billion.

Zelenskyy met with Pope Francis

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy came to the Vatican for a meeting with Pope Francis. During the meeting, the parties discussed captured and deported Ukrainians, the president mentioned that journalist Viktoria Roshchyna died in captivity in Russia.

Attacks on Odesa and Kharkiv oblasts

Overnight on October 10, Russian troops attacked Odesa Oblast with ballistic missiles. As a result of the attack, people found themselves under the rubble of a building. Three died - a 43-year-old woman, a 22-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl. Another woman later died of her injuries in the hospital.

During the day, the Russians shelled Kharkiv Oblast. As a result of the attack, a 57-year-old man died, seven more people were injured.

The Ministry of Education and Culture supported the draft law on the Ukrainian language during breaks

The Ministry of Education and Science generally supported the proposal of the lawmakers to create a Ukrainian-speaking environment in educational institutions — that is, the obligation to speak Ukrainian not only during classes, but also during breaks.
