Death toll in Russian bombing of Zaporizhzhia rises to 3, with another 45 injured
Rescue workers overnight recovered the body of a child from the rubble in Zaporizhzhia, raising the death toll from Russian airstrikes on July 19 to three, according to Ukraine’s State Emergency Service.
Another 45 people were injured, including eight children.
The Zaporizhzhia Oblast Military Administration said 78 victims are currently in hospitals, with three in serious condition.
In all, Russian forces carried out six strikes with guided aerial bombs on Zaporizhzhia on July 19. There were four impact sites: two at industrial and warehouse facilities, and two directly in residential areas. The heaviest consequences were recorded in the residential zones.
The most difficult situation was in a five-story apartment building where apartments from the third through fifth floors were destroyed. Rescue workers spent many hours carrying out a search-and-rescue operation, trying to free people trapped under the rubble. Those found last could no longer be saved.
Emergency and rescue work at the sites has now been completed.
Law enforcement has opened an investigation into a war crime resulting in deaths under Part 2 of Article 438 of Ukraine’s Criminal Code.
What is happening in Zaporizhzhia?
Zaporizhzhia Oblast Military Administration head Ivan Fedorov said that despite the “unprecedented strain,” all city services continue to operate without interruption.
The medical system remains functional, with necessary reserves already mobilized. If needed, additional hospital beds can be deployed quickly to provide care for all victims.
Authorities are also working on additional support mechanisms to help residents receive financial assistance and hire builders on their own for repairs and reconstruction.
