Russia's Lipetsk-2 airport, Energia battery plant hit in drone attack

In the early hours of Thursday, drones struck Russia’s Lipetsk Oblast, with explosions reported in the city of Lipetsk and the town of Yelets, according to regional governor Igor Artamonov.

Artamonov stated that air defenses were active in the region, but falling drone debris reportedly killed an elderly woman and injured three others. Social media reports suggested the Lipetsk-2 military airport was a primary target, though it remains unclear whether the drones caused any damage to the facility.

Explosions were also reported in Yelets, near the Energia plant. Artamonov confirmed that one drone struck an unfinished high-rise building in the town. However, social media indicated that explosions occurred close to the Energia plant, a key Russian manufacturer of chemical power sources.

The facility, which produces batteries for munition guidance kits installed on aerial bombs, Iskander-M missiles, sea-based cruise missiles, and universal batteries for specialized equipment, was previously targeted by Ukrainian drones on May 23, 2025.

The company is called one of the largest producers of chemical power sources in Russia.

Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed that 69 drones were shot down across several regions, including 10 over Lipetsk. Ukraine, which Russia accused of the attack, has not yet commented on the incident.
