Ukrainian State Special Transport Service soldier caught leaking defense data to Russia's GRU

Ukrainian counterintelligence uncovered a serviceman who was passing sensitive Ministry of Defense information to Russia’s GRU, according to the Office of the Prosecutor General and the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU).
Investigators say Russian agents contacted the mobilized soldier during his basic military training after noticing his pro-Russian comments on social media. His primary task was to guide Russian airstrikes targeting Ukrainian Defense Forces in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. A Russian handler instructed him to collect data on troop locations and coordinates of military infrastructure.
The suspect allegedly shared information about four military sites in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast with a GRU operative. He also reportedly urged Russian forces to destroy a territorial recruitment and social support center in Kharkiv, where he was mobilized.
Authorities prevented the leak of sensitive information and detained the suspect during training at a military range. During the operation, measures were taken to secure Ukrainian Defense Forces locations in areas of enemy intelligence activity.
What is the punishment?
The suspect faces charges under Article 111, Part 2 of Ukraine’s Criminal Code—treason committed under martial law.
He is currently in custody without bail and faces potential life imprisonment with property confiscation.
