Russian forces attacked a State Emergency Service unit in Nizhyn, Chernihiv Oblast, on Wednesday, killing one firefighter and injuring two others, regional governor Viacheslav Chaus and the State Emergency Service reported.

Russia's army launched several drone strikes on the unit's territory, sparking fires in buildings. Firefighters responded to extinguish the blazes, but at that moment, the aggressor directed another drone straight at a fire truck. The incident occurred on Rescuer's Day in Ukraine.

The attack killed the driver, 45-year-old Master Sergeant of Civil Protection Oleksandr Hula.

"Performing his duty, Oleksandr saved others until the very end, even in mortal danger. His death is a heavy and immeasurably painful loss for the entire SES family. We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the fallen Hero," the SES said.

Overnight into September 15, Russian forces targeted rescuers extinguishing a fire at a critical infrastructure site in Nizhyn district, Chernihiv Oblast, injuring four firefighters who were hospitalized.
