Moscow’s position on a U.S. proposal to freeze the Ukraine frontline as a starting point for talks remains unchanged, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Monday, according to the state news agency Interfax.

“The topic has come up repeatedly with various nuances during Russian-U.S. contacts, and Russia has consistently given the same well-known response: the consistency of Russia’s position does not change,” Peskov said.

The BBC Russian Service noted that Moscow continues to demand Ukrainian forces withdraw from areas it is trying to seize. In November 2024, Peskov said Russia does not accept ending the war against Ukraine by freezing the frontline.

U.S. President Donald Trump said he supports freezing the Russia-Ukraine war along current frontline lines and denied urging Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to cede all of Donetsk Oblast.

“We think what they should do is just stop at those lines where they are now, at the front lines. The rest is very hard to discuss if you’re going to say, ‘You take this, we take that,’” Trump said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has refused to cede any territory to Moscow.
