Russia handed over 1,000 bodies it claims belong to fallen Ukrainian service members as part of repatriation efforts, Ukraine's Coordination Headquarters for Treatment of Prisoners of War reported on Thursday.

Investigators and experts from the Interior Ministry will soon conduct all necessary examinations and identifications of the repatriated remains, the headquarters said.

The repatriation involved the Coordination Headquarters, the Joint Center at the Security Service of Ukraine, the Armed Forces, the Interior Ministry, the Office of the Human Rights Commissioner, the Secretariat of the Commissioner for Persons Missing Under Special Circumstances, the State Emergency Service and other structures in the security and defense sector.

The Coordination Headquarters also thanked the International Committee of the Red Cross for its assistance.

The armed forces are transporting the repatriated remains to state specialized facilities, organizing handovers to law enforcement and forensic medical experts in the Health Ministry system.

In the previous repatriation on September 18, Ukraine received 1,000 bodies of fallen troops who defended the country on the Kursk, Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia fronts.
