Russia's massive strike on Ukraine's energy sector on Thursday damaged substations critical for nuclear safety, the International Atomic Energy Agency reported.

IAEA teams at the South Ukrainian and Khmelnytskyi nuclear power plants said each station lost access to one external power line during the attack.

The IAEA team at Khmelnytskyi NPP sheltered in their hotel for several hours due to the attack.

At Rivne NPP, the team reported that, at the grid operator's request, the plant reduced output on two of its four units.

“The dangers to nuclear safety continue to be very real and ever-present,” said Director General Grossi. “I once again call for maximum military restraint in the vicinity of nuclear facilities and full respect of the seven indispensable pillars for nuclear safety and security.”
