Russian forces launched a drone attack on Kharkiv overnight into Wednesday, injuring 36 people, including two children, regional governor Oleg Synegubov and regional police said.

Around midnight, the Russians directed 19 Geran-2 drones at the city's Slobidskyi, Osnovyanskyi and Nemyshlianskyi districts, preliminary information showed.

36 Kharkiv residents sought medical help, including children aged 9 and 13 diagnosed with acute stress reactions; six of the injured were hospitalized.

Rescuers evacuated 48 people, including three children, from a smoke-filled apartment building entrance.

Police said the assault damaged more than 10 apartment buildings, garages, civilian enterprise premises, an ambulance substation, a supermarket, gym, store, school and dozens of cars and trolleybuses.

Emergency response services are at the scene.

Investigators opened pre-trial probes into war crimes under Article 438 of Ukraine's Criminal Code.

Residential homes, outbuildings, a church, stores and vehicles were damaged in the town, along with an infrastructure site.
