Explosions reported in Engels, home to airfield used for Russian strikes on Ukraine

Explosions were reported overnight into July 16 in the Russian city of Engels in Saratov Oblast after authorities warned of a drone threat, according to Governor Roman Busargin.
Civilian infrastructure was allegedly damaged in the drone attack. According to preliminary information, no casualties were reported.
Videos posted online showed drones flying over Engels. Some appeared to crash into residential buildings, while others likely targeted the local military airfield, according to the OSINT project Exilenova+.
The Engels airfield, officially known as Engels-2, is a key base for Russia’s strategic aviation. It hosts Tu-95MS, Tu-22M3 and Tu-160 bombers, as well as storage sites for FAB and KAB aerial bombs and cruise missiles.
Aircraft taking off from the base are used to launch missile strikes on Ukraine.
