SBU details strike on one of Russia’s largest refineries 1,500 kilometers from Ukrainian border
Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) has confirmed a strike on the Lukoil-Permnefteorgsintez refinery in Russia, a facility located more than 1,500 kilometers from Ukraine in the city of Perm.
Drone strikes reportedly caused a large fire on the refinery’s grounds.
According to the agency, the blaze engulfed the primary oil processing unit, one of the plant’s key technological installations.
Lukoil-Permnefteorgsintez is one of Russia’s largest oil refining enterprises and supplies both the civilian and military sectors. Its declared processing capacity is nearly 13 million tons of oil per year.
“Striking such refineries is of strategic importance, because they produce fuel for military equipment, aviation, and the logistics of the occupying army. In addition, the oil refining industry remains one of the main sources of revenue for the Russian budget, which finances the war against Ukraine,” the SBU said.
On June 25, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced a 40-day “operation of pressure” against Russia aimed at forcing it to end the war. Since then, SBU special operations forces have struck military support vessels in occupied Kerch, at least seven Russian aircraft in Crimea, air defense systems, oil facilities in Russia and other targets.
