‘We’ll keep warm with Russian refineries on fire’: Ukraine’s military responds to Russian winter threat
In response to a Russian Defense Ministry post apparently threatening intensified strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure this winter, the Ukrainian military published an image of its own — hinting at further attacks on Russian oil refineries.
The image was posted on social media by the Strategic Communications Directorate of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
It shows a fire at an industrial facility alongside the caption: “We’ll keep warm with Russian refineries on fire.”
Earlier, Russia’s Defense Ministry published an image of Shahed attack drones with the caption “You’ll get a freeze this winter.”
The Russian word used in the post, zamorozka, can mean both freezing temperatures and a “freeze” in hostilities. The post therefore appeared to combine a threat of intensified attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure with a rejection of calls to halt the fighting.
The exchange comes amid renewed discussion of possible limits on attacks against civilian targets.
Reuters reported earlier, citing sources, that Ukraine had proposed that Russia halt attacks on civilian targets in the Black Sea. The proposal was reportedly conveyed through a third party, although Moscow said it had received “no formal proposals.”
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov later rejected the possibility of halting hostilities along the current front line.
Earlier, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said he had urged Ukraine and Russia to develop a mechanism for a moratorium on attacks against ships in the Black Sea.
