Kremlin says Ukraine peace talks are 'deeply on pause'
Peace negotiations between Ukraine and Russia are currently “deeply on pause,” Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said, as U.S. officials continue efforts to revive diplomacy aimed at ending the war.
“There are no new ideas at the moment,” Peskov said, according to Russia's Interfax news agency. He claimed that Ukraine was well aware of Moscow's demands and said Russia would continue its military operations.
Ukraine has repeatedly backed calls for an unconditional ceasefire and said it is prepared for further negotiations. Russia has not agreed to such a ceasefire and continues its offensive against Ukraine.
Peskov's comments come after CIA Director John Ratcliffe traveled to Moscow for talks with Russian officials. U.S. media reported that Ratcliffe urged Moscow to pursue serious negotiations before Russia's military and economic position deteriorates further.
The Washington Post also reported that Ratcliffe warned Russian officials that further escalation in Ukraine could backfire by pushing U.S. President Donald Trump closer to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
