Ukraine says Russian battlefield casualties have surpassed 1.5 million
Russia has suffered more than 1.5 million battlefield casualties since launching its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, according to estimates released by Ukraine's General Staff on Sept. 9.
The Ukrainian military estimated Russia's total personnel losses at 1,500,870 killed and wounded after recording another 1,480 casualties over the previous day.
The General Staff called the figure Russia's largest military losses in a single war since World War II and said they exceeded the combined Soviet and Russian losses in armed conflicts during the second half of the 20th and early 21st centuries.
It also compared the figure with Soviet losses during the decade-long war in Afghanistan and Russia's two wars in Chechnya.
Ukraine's estimates of Russian battlefield losses cannot be independently verified. Moscow does not regularly disclose comprehensive figures for its military casualties.
