Russian battlefield casualties outnumber Ukraine's 10 to 1 in September, NATO official tells Bloomberg

Russian forces suffered more than 50,000 casualties in Ukraine in September, including up to 28,000 killed, compared with approximately 5,000 Ukrainian casualties, Bloomberg reported, citing a senior NATO military official.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Russian troops continued attempting to advance through heavily defended areas saturated with attack drones, land mines and artillery fire.

The estimated losses suggest Russian casualties were roughly ten times higher than Ukraine's during the month.

Bloomberg did not provide an independent verification of the figures or details of the methodology used to calculate them.

The heavy losses come as Ukrainian forces have recaptured more than 125 square kilometers of territory, while long-range strikes have targeted Russian oil refineries and data centers, Bloomberg reported.

Russia's military spending is also expected to approach 17 trillion rubles ($199 billion) this year, approximately 40% above the original budget plan announced in late 2025.

In July, Ukrainian presidential office deputy head Pavlo Palisa estimated that 43,000 Russian troops had been killed or wounded that month. Bloomberg noted that the figure could not be independently verified.

Moscow does not publicly release comprehensive figures on military casualties.
