Russia struck Ukraine's energy sector 76 times since Trump announced ceasefire, Zelenskyy says

Russia has carried out 76 strikes targeting Ukraine's energy and oil and gas infrastructure since US President Donald Trump announced an alleged energy ceasefire a week ago, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on October 18.
Russian forces struck electrical substations in the Vinnytsia, Zhytomyr, Khmelnytskyi and Odesa regions overnight, leaving tens of thousands of households without power, Zelenskyy said.
"Since the American president announced an energy ceasefire a week ago, Russia has deliberately struck Ukraine's energy and oil and gas sector 76 times," he wrote.
According to Zelenskyy, Russia launched nearly 2,700 attack drones, 1,700 guided aerial bombs and 66 missiles at Ukraine over the past week, most of the missiles being ballistic.
He said the attacks were primarily aimed at Ukraine's energy infrastructure as Russia sought to cause widespread blackouts.
Overnight strikes also hit residential buildings, killing two people and injuring 12, including two children, Zelenskyy said.

Trump announced on October 11 that Ukraine and Russia had agreed to halt attacks on energy infrastructure. Zelenskyy subsequently said the announcement was news to him, adding that Ukraine was prepared to observe such a ceasefire if Russia did the same.
The Financial Times later reported that Washington had pressured Kyiv to stop striking Russian oil refineries, threatening to suspend weapons purchases and intelligence sharing.
Zelenskyy said Russia's continued attacks demonstrated that Moscow was not responding to concessions by taking steps toward peace.
"Every signal that they have an opportunity to make money is perceived as proof that their bet on war is working and that they can keep fighting," he said.
