NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg agreed with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán that Budapest will not block decisions regarding Ukraine, reported Hungarian outlets 24.hu and RTL.

Officials held a personal meeting on June 12, at the end of which Orbán discussed reviewing relations between NATO and Hungary.

He stated that Hungary is a loyal and committed member of NATO, fulfills all its obligations, and 1,300 Hungarian soldiers are currently participating in NATO operations. But it seems that Hungary will avoid helping Ukraine.

Orbán said that Hungary "notes that the weight and number of opinions different from its own are significant."

"We could express our position every time, but we don't have enough strength to change different opinions. Therefore, we have made it clear that we do not want to block decisions in NATO that differ from our interpretation of the situation. We emphasized that all actions outside NATO territory, according to NATO rules, can only be voluntary," Orbán said.

Stoltenberg expects that at the July summit in Washington, NATO members will agree that the Alliance will assume a leading role in security assistance and coordination, as well as financial commitments to Ukraine. Viktor Orbán made it clear that Hungary does not want to participate in these efforts.

"And I accept it," the media quoted Stoltenberg as saying.

Background

Orbán previously stated that Hungary is working on "rethinking" the country's NATO membership status in order to be able to potentially refuse to deepen its support for Ukraine.

The prime minister noted that Hungary adheres to the NATO charter, according to which it is a defense alliance, and there is no question of NATO fighting outside its territory.

"We have indicated that we do not want to enter into this with either weapons or financial assistance. We adhere to the basic idea of NATO, and serious work is currently underway on how we can remain within NATO, so that we do not participate in operations outside the borders of a NATO member state," said Orbán.
