At least 32 children killed in Pakistan school roof collapse, owner arrested

At least 32 children and a teacher were killed when a school roof collapsed during morning classes in Peshawar, northwestern Pakistan, on October 15, Reuters reported, citing police and rescue officials.

At least 45 people were injured, including three children in critical condition with head injuries. Most of the children killed were under 13.

The roof of a privately run Al-Khair Education Center collapsed onto classrooms below, bringing down two floors of the building. Rescue workers spent four to five hours searching through the rubble as families gathered outside waiting for news of their children.

Peshawar police chief Mian Saeed said the building had a weak structure and that additional construction had overloaded its roof, causing the collapse.

The school's owner has been arrested, and authorities have launched an investigation.

Relatives of the victims accused the school of ignoring warnings about the building's condition.

"Make an example of them, a lesson for all, so that no one dares open a school just to make money without providing facilities," Mohammad Zaman, who lost two nephews, told Reuters.

Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed condolences to the victims' families.
