Orban urges Zelenskyy to think about ceasefire and negotiations

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said that he arrived in Kyiv on July 2 to discuss the possibility of creating peace with the Ukrainian president.

This is stated on Orban's website.

During a briefing with Volodymyr Zelenskyy following the meeting, Orban said he asked the Ukrainian president to think about “whether it is possible to take a break, cease fire, and then start negotiations”.

Orban emphasized that he did not insist on his initiative and accepted the Ukrainian arguments.

“I am very grateful to the President for his frank opinion on this issue,” Orban said.

In addition, Zelenskyy and Orban agreed to open the first school for Ukrainian-speaking children in Hungary. Orban supported Zelenskyy's initiative and emphasized that with the arrival of a large number of Ukrainian refugees in Hungary, there was a need to educate them.

Ukraine and Hungary are also preparing an agreement on bilateral relations.

“The content of our dialogue on all today's issues can become the basis for a future bilateral document between our states, which will regulate all our relations and will be based on a mirror approach in relations between the countries,” Zelenskyy said, as quoted by Yevropeiska Pravda.

About Orban's visit

For several months, Ukraine and Hungary have been working on the planned meeting between Zelenskyy and Viktor Orban. The last time the leaders of Ukraine and Hungary met in Brussels on June 27. At that time, cameras filmed their conversation, but it is not known what the leaders discussed.

The president also contacted the Hungarian prime minister in May to invite him to the June Peace Summit and in Argentina during the inauguration of President Javier Milei. At the time, Zelenskyy said that he had spoken with Orban about the dialogue between the two countries and Ukraine's accession to the EU.

The head of the Presidential Office, Andriy Yermak, said that “a lot has been done for this visit”.

“An important conversation about the future of Europe, security, international law, and the 'peace formula',” he concluded.

Hungary, headed by Prime Minister Viktor Orban and Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto, has repeatedly shown its favorable attitude toward the Kremlin. In addition, Orban said that Hungary would have “75 opportunities” to block Ukraine's accession to the European Union. Moreover, Budapest claimed that the rights of Hungarians were being violated in Ukraine and threatened to block Ukraine's European integration if Kyiv did not make concessions on the issue of national minorities.
