Suspension of a Defense Ministry official and Ukraine's lawsuit against Russia in The Hague: highlights for February 2
Defense Minister Rustem Umierov has suspended the head of one of the Defense Ministry's departments, Toomas Nakhkur because he is involved in a criminal investigation into embezzlement. The International Court of Justice in The Hague has recognized its jurisdiction in the case of “genocide in eastern Ukraine”. We have collected the main news for February 2, 2024.
Suspension of a Defense Ministry official
Rustem Umierov has suspended Toomas Nahkur, the acting director of the Department of Military and Technical Policy, Development of Armaments and Military Equipment of the Ministry of Defense.
The reason for the suspension is the announcement of suspicion in criminal proceedings, which was served on Nahkur on January 27, 2024. Subsequently, the court imposed a measure of restraint on Nakhkur in the form of a personal commitment.
At the same time, another person involved in the case, the former head of the department, Oleksandr Liev, announced that he would take a public polygraph to prove his innocence.
They are both suspected of embezzling almost UAH 1.5 billion for the purchase of ammunition for the Armed Forces. hromadske devoted its investigation to this case.
Hearing of the lawsuit against Russia in The Hague
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague has declared its jurisdiction over Kyiv's lawsuit against Moscow over Russia's claims of “genocide in eastern Ukraine” to justify a full-scale invasion. The court rejected virtually all of Russia's claims and decided to proceed with the case.
This case is not about whether Russia committed genocide in Ukraine or not. Kyiv sued because Russia falsely claimed “genocide of the Russian-speaking population in eastern Ukraine” to justify its full-scale invasion in 2022.
Coalition for the return of children
Canada and Ukraine will create a coalition to return Ukrainian children deported by Russia. Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly noted that her country will involve many states to obtain information about abducted children in a certain way.
The coalition will also work with those states that have direct relations with Russia to facilitate the return of children.
New details of the attack on the Belbek airfield
As a result of the attack on the Belbek airfield in the temporarily occupied Crimea, at least three occupiers' aircraft were damaged. Personnel were also killed.
According to Yurii Ihnat, spokesman for the Ukrainian Air Force, the occupiers themselves admit the damage to the aircraft and the destruction of personnel in their obituaries.
Approval of the German budget with aid for Ukraine
On February 2, the Bundestag approved the federal budget for 2024. Earlier, the German government reported that more than 7 billion euros would be allocated for military support to Ukraine.
These funds will be allocated mainly through bilateral support, as well as through financial contributions under the European Peace Fund.
In addition, 520 million euros will be allocated to replace the Bundeswehr's equipment that was transferred to Ukraine. It is also expected that Ukrainian refugees in Germany will receive about €7 billion in aid.
