A 52-year-old man from Lviv has been formally charged with the murder of Ukrainian MP Andriy Parubiy, the Prosecutor General’s Office announced on Monday.

Lviv Oblast Prosecutor Mykola Meret personally signed the notice of suspicion, stating that it is “based on objective evidence pointing to the suspect’s commission of the MP’s murder.”

The suspect’s actions are classified under two articles of Ukraine’s Criminal Code:

  • Part 1 of Article 115 (intentional murder)
  • Part 1 of Article 263 (illegal handling of weapons).

Investigative actions with the suspect are ongoing, with searches being conducted at his places of residence and stay. Prosecutors are preparing a court motion to detain him without the possibility of bail.

The pre-trial investigation continues to establish all circumstances of the incident.

What is known about the murder of Andriy Parubiy?

On August 30, Andriy Parubiy, a sitting MP and former Speaker of Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada, was killed in Lviv. An unidentified man fired approximately eight shots from a short-barreled firearm, killing Parubiy at the scene.

The attacker fled, prompting a “Siren” operation in Lviv.

Early on Monday, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that law enforcement had detained a suspect who provided initial testimony.

Zelenskyy stated that the murder was meticulously planned.

Footage from local Telegram channels showed the assailant, dressed as a delivery courier, shooting Parubiy.

National Police Chief Ivan Vyhovskyi reported that the suspect had prepared for the killing over an extended period, tracking the victim, and attempted to hide in Khmelnytskyi Oblast after the attack.

Vyhovskyi emphasized that the crime was not random and bears a “Russian trace.”
