What is happening in Kursk Oblast?

Against the background of reports of Russian "milbloggers" about a border breach in Kursk Oblast, Russian leader Vladimir Putin called out a "large-scale provocation" on the part of Ukraine.

The regional governor confirmed that locals are being evacuated from the border area. All local emergency services have been put into enhanced mode of operation.

Russian outlet Agentstvo wrote that since the beginning of the breakthrough in Kursk Oblast, the Russian authorities have announced six times the supposed halt of the advance and even the retreat of the Ukrainian military. Although the combat zone expanded to 430 km², and the Armed Forces of Ukraine allegedly took almost complete control of the town of Sudzha.

The Institute for the Study of War with reference to geolocation footage and statements of Russian "milbloggers" writes that Ukrainian forces appear to be present in areas up to 35 kilometers in Kursk Oblast from the international border with Sumy Oblast. Although they do not control this entire territory.

According to the Washington Post, Ukraine currently controls the Sudzha gas metering station, located approximately 8 kilometers deep into Russia.
