Ukraine's security council head Umerov in Istanbul to restart prisoner exchanges

Rustem Umerov, Secretary of Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council, has arrived in the Turkish city of Istanbul to unblock the prisoner swap process, he announced on Facebook.

"In the coming days, I will work in Türkiye and the Middle East to unblock the exchange process. There was an agreement, and it must be implemented. The Ukrainian president's task is clear: Ukrainians must return home from captivity," he said.

Umerov mentioned he has already held meetings in Türkiye, though he did not disclose further details.

In October, Ukraine conducted a combined exchange that freed 185 soldiers and 20 civilians from Russian captivity. Some of these exchanges were conducted according to agreements made in Istanbul, and some occurred during the 69th exchange round.

In September, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine is in contact with Russia to prepare a new prisoner swap, aiming to liberate a thousand Ukrainians.
