EU adds nearly 1,600 Russian sanctions targets in largest single expansion since war began

European Union foreign ministers have approved nearly 1,600 new sanctions listings targeting Russia's military-industrial complex, the largest single expansion of the bloc's sanctions list since the start of Russia's war against Ukraine, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas announced on October 12.
More than half of the newly sanctioned individuals and entities are connected to the production of ballistic missiles, Kallas said.
"We are making it significantly harder, slower and more expensive for Russia to produce the weapons it uses to kill Ukrainians," she wrote on X.
According to figures previously reported by Euronews, the new listings cover 743 individuals and 826 organizations accused of supporting Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Kallas described the decision as a demonstration of European unity.
"Europe is again showing a united front," she said.
The announcement follows Ukraine's decision on October 11 to impose sanctions on 70 Russian specialists involved in producing Iskander-M and Zircon missiles, including engineers, production managers and employees of chemical companies supplying the missile industry.
Kyiv has said it intends to work with international partners to coordinate restrictions targeting both Russian defense enterprises and the individuals involved in weapons production.
The EU's latest decision significantly expands the number of Russian military-industrial figures and organizations subject to European sanctions, although its practical impact on missile production remains to be seen.
